No talk, only force: Zamfara governor rejects negotiations with terrorists

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has ruled out talks with terrorists and bandits, vowing to confront insecurity through force.

The governor said his administration would focus on security operations and strategic interventions instead of peace deals with armed groups. He spoke while addressing residents’ concerns over persistent attacks in the state.

Lawal rejected calls for dialogue with bandits. The calls increased after reports that some community elders attempted negotiations. He said such an approach was unacceptable and would weaken government authority.

“Even in states where negotiations have taken place, have attacks completely stopped? Some may say there has been improvement, but how can a government sit down with criminals and negotiate? That would imply that terrorists are stronger than the state.

“I do not accept that terrorists are stronger than the government. Therefore, as Governor of Zamfara State, I maintain that I will not negotiate with terrorists,” Lawal declared.

The governor admitted insecurity remains a major challenge in Zamfara. He insisted, however, that government has not lost control of the situation and security forces are pressing operations.

Lawal also reacted to protests by residents along the Shinkafi–Kaura Namoda Road over repeated attacks. He said citizens have the right to voice frustration and government must listen.

“Yes, such protests occurred. People have the right to express their opinions. As governor, I cannot stop citizens from protesting. The government exists to serve the people. If people are unhappy, we must listen to them. If their concerns can be addressed, we will address them. If something is beyond our capacity, we will explain that as well. That is democracy,” he added.

The governor said his administration would continue to act on issues within its capacity. He added that explaining limits to residents was also part of democratic governance.
